STEM at Huncoat

We enjoy our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) at Huncoat and set many challenges, fun days, theme days to enhance our STEM critical thinking and problem solving. But also we encourage aspirations in STEM as a future career.

We love to link our Science, Technology, Maths and Computing to offer STEM opportunities. We engage in National Science Week in March each year. We offer the opportunity to take part in STEM challenges throughout the year: Build a Light Up Christmas Decoration/ Construct a Christmas sleigh that moves/ Create an Easter Bonnet from Recycled materials

We have offered parents opportunities to participate in STEM workshops with their child: lego building/ bridge making/ tower building/ paper areoplane competitions and we also offer STEM challenges as part of our Able, Gifted Cluster: Constructing a 3 Little Pigs house that won't blow down!

In our libraries we enjoy books on scientists/ women in science/ black history and science.

During 2022-24 we were also fortunate to be part of an Enthuse Science Partnership where we worked together as part of 6 schools to enhance science.

Enthuse STEM Learning Partnership

Huncoat Primary School, together with West End Primary School, Rhyddings High School, Hollins High School, Spring Hill Primary and Belthorn Primary are proud to announce that we have been successful in becoming an ENTHUSE Partnership.  As an ENTHUSE Partnership we  will gain access to £20,000 worth of support over the next two years to help raise the profile of STEM-related careers and employment pathways in their schools/colleges.

This partnership is part-funded by Daisy Communications.

ENTHUSE Partnerships bring schools and colleges together to work collaboratively and are designed to inspire young people into STEM subjects and STEM-related careers. The partnerships have significant benefits for teachers, young people and employers - transforming both the educational culture around STEM in schools and young people’s achievement and aspirations. Schools and colleges taking part receive access to continued professional development, leading educational resources, STEM Ambassadors and teacher placements. With links to local businesses and industry, our learners gain a greater understanding of the STEM industry and the possible career paths.

Year 5 and 6 were lucky to have a Glider Experience Workshop in National STEM Week. The children learnt about jobs within engineering/ the learnt all about how planes work/ the vocabulary related to parts of a plane. Then they all made their own gliders and tested them to see which could stay up in the air longest and which flew the furthest!

We also linked STEM to World Book Day this year - see our Reading Schoool Pages!
